Since 2022, the University of Melbourne’s Veterinary School has been using risr/assess to streamline its written and clinical assessments (OSCEs), enhancing the user experience, increasing efficiency and supporting assessment quality improvement processes.

Why risr/?

The School sought an assessment platform that offered exam item banking and systematic blueprinting so they could centralise all assessment questions across its four-year Veterinary Medicine degree. A key driver was the need for clear assessment metrics and feedback to benefit students, lecturers, and accreditors while strengthening the overall quality assurance of assessment content and processes.

Senior leadership at the school were also focussed on improving the delivery of written assessments – the backbone of the School’s assessment methods. Additionally, enhancing the validity of OSCEs was a priority, especially given the School’s prior reliance on paper-based assessment management.

Having previously worked with the University’s School of Medicine, risr/ was recommended as a trusted provider with a proven ability to support assessment delivery in veterinary sciences.

Standout features

  • Ease of Use – The platform’s intuitive interface allows the School’s team to confidently deliver high-stakes assessments.
  • Comprehensive Blueprinting – risr/assess ensures assessments are mapped accurately across the curriculum.
  • Automated Student Feedback – Individualised feedback reports proved to be a student favourite, providing valuable insights while significantly reducing workload for lecturers.
  • Accreditation Support – The system clearly documents assessment processes, meeting key accreditation requirements.

Successes & future plans

The School first trialed risr/assess with a small student cohort during pandemic-driven home assessments. With ongoing collaboration and support from the risr/ team, the School has successfully scaled up its implementation and is on track to roll out risr/assess across its entire student body.

The risr/ team has truly enjoyed collaborating with the Veterinary Medicine team and looks forward to supporting their broader rollout. This project has also provided valuable insights into their unique context, allowing us to apply our learnings to future collaborations within the veterinary sector.
