It was a privilege to join the health professional education community in Ōtautahi Christchurch for ANZAHPE 2026. The atmosphere throughout the conference was electric, filled with passionate educators committed to evolving the way we prepare the next generation of healthcare professionals.
The conference theme, Weaving Connection, struck a particular chord with the team at risr/. At the heart of our work, we believe that education is ultimately about connections: between faculty and learners, between data and insight and crucially, between high stakes assessment and real-world clinical performance. As we reflected on the sessions and conversations from the week, it became clear that the sector is moving toward a future where fragmented systems are being replaced by cohesive, unified ecosystems.
A Conversation on the 360-Degree Learner
A standout moment for us was our sponsor breakfast session: The 360-Degree Learner: Bridging the Gap Between Knowledge and Performance hosted by Kathy Bouriscot and El Pascoe.
The discussion yielded some vital insights into how institutions can better support their learners:
- Human in the Loop: Technology should enhance, not replace, expert faculty judgement. The goal is to provide educators with clarity so they can spend more time mentoring learners and less time managing administrative burden.
- Moving Beyond Tick-Box Exercises: True competency isn’t measured by a checklist. We need to shift toward digital frameworks that capture meaningful evidence of progression.
- The Power of the Unified Thread: By linking written exam data, clinical performance metrics (like OSCEs) and workplace based evidence into a single ecosystem, educators can see a fuller picture of learner competence.
- Proactive Remediation: A unified platform acts as an “early warning system.” When data is connected, it becomes much easier to identify learners who need support early in their journey, rather than after a summative failure.
Let’s Keep the Conversation Going
Thank you to everyone who stopped by our booth to share their stories and challenges with us. It is these conversations that fuel our own innovation and remind us of the importance of the work we do.
If you weren’t able to attend our session or if you would like to discuss how a unified assessment ecosystem could support your institution’s specific educational goals, our APAC team would love to hear from you.
